Tights are cool (& sexy), don't let them intimidate you
Not your grandma's pantyhose.
Tights are a deeply misunderstood accessory. Fashionable, functional, and versatile; they’re a triple threat. When styled correctly, they can add depth, intrigue, warmth, playfulness, and sex appeal to any outfit. Don’t let them intimidate you.
As an avid tights activist (serving under our leader Blair Waldorf), I’m here to dispel false allegations made against tights, stockings, knee highs, and other members of the hosiery committee as being “dated” or “weird.” These are not your grandma’s pantyhose! But even if they were… chic.
The Cardinal Rules of Tights
Understand Opaque vs. Sheer. I can’t be the only one who thought opaque meant see-through… right? I didn’t realize I was wrong about this definition until I asked my nail tech for a light pink that was NOT opaque and left with sheer nails. Oops.
Anyways, when it comes to tights, sheer and opaque are both beautiful options. Opaque tights make your legs look longer, especially when worn with shoes in the same color. They also provide more warmth and coverage. Sheer tights are more cheeky, but much easier to snag. The coverage depends on the denier (or thickness) level. I don’t buy anything below a denier 30 as to avoid rips and tears.

Use them to bridge you between seasons. Tights are delightfully transitional. Adding them to an outfit in the spring or fall allows you to 1) not fucking freeze and 2) get more wear out of your ‘summer’ or ‘winter’ only stuff. Use color and texture to lean into the upcoming season.

Don’t be afraid of color. This is where Blair shines. Fearless! I love a statement, so I try to push the boundaries here. If you are a bit more reserved, opt for something more subtle or sheer. Instead of a cherry red, go for the burgundy. Instead of an opaque dark brown, go for a sheer chestnut.

Texture adds sex appeal and interest. There’s a reason why lingerie sets come with stockings and garters… they’re sexy. A detailed lace, a small fishnet, or a thigh-high stocking turns your outfit from cute to HOT.

Layer with socks to make them more casual. Tights can make outfits look extra dressy*. To offset this, layer crew socks over them and pair with sneakers or loafers. Hailey Beiber is the queen of this (left). Socks can also add a tiny bit of edge to an otherwise polished look (right).

Want to be really cool? Wear them under your jeans. Subtle, but lethal styling. I guarantee you will be the best-dressed girl at the party. Details like this elevate and add intention to your outfits.
